The duties of the planned conductor staff will consist of ticket inspection and keeping the safety for criminal act in cars. Providing that safety on trains can be maintained, it may be possible to gradually reduce the conductor staff.
The maintenance staff have been kept to a minimum level able to conduct only daily inspections and maintenance. Staff required to perform monthly and annual rolling stock inspections and handling in the event of rolling stock or line accidents, etc. will be brought in from outside as the need occurs.
5.5 Facilities and Rolling Stock Plan
5.5.1 Track
The whole route has been made double track, giving it a line length in single track terms of 7.3 km (see Figure 5-8). The track gauge has been set at 1,065 mm in consideration of the possibility of connection with Metro lines in the future. The rails will be 48 kg/in, the type most commonly used in South Africa. The track is composed of joint use sections with roads and exclusive train use sections, and those divisions are shown in Table 5-15. Approximately 43% of the line consists of exclusive use sections, and this is almost the same as the share in the existing plan of approximately 46%.
